VIDEO Trailer: “Tales of the Waria”, a new documentary by Kathy Huang, follows the lives of four waria living in Makassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia. A waria, in Indonesian, is a person who is biologically male but who prefers to identify as female. In this film, while the search for love is one focus of the lives of the film’s subjects, their position in a society that is predominantly Muslim is also underscored.

The documentary will be screened by the Center for Southeast Asia Studies at UC Berkeley on Wednesday, February 15, with Kathy Huang on hand for Q&A afterwards.
